Wines of Baja Guadalupe Valley

October 14, 2026

What surprises visitors is the quality ceiling and the sheer variety: Grenache grown next to Nebbiolo next to Tempranillo next to Sauvignon Blanc, all within a few miles of each other. Wine country in Baja, Mexico is an incredible study in contrasts: lonely dirt roads filled with potholes that open up onto sleek wineries and world-class restaurants.

Valle de Guadalupe sits about 70 miles south of San Diego and 20 miles east of Ensenada in Baja California, Mexico — a high desert valley at roughly 1,000 feet elevation where the Pacific fog burns off by mid-morning and temperatures routinely swing 40°F between day and night. Vines were first planted in the mid-1800s by Dominican priests, and commercial production of wine began in the 1960s

The number of wineries in the area expanded from 6 in 1999 to 25 in 2005, among them big volume producers like L.A. Cetto, Santo Tomás, and Domecq. By 2023, the valley boasted 150 wineries, 92 hotels and boutiques, and world class restaurants.

Beso Imports specializes in bringing wines from the region to the US marketplace. We will taste a selection of whites and reds from both large and small wineries and get an overview of this remarkable wine region.
